Global opportunities for students as Oasis Academy Mayfield appoints Deputy Principals

Oasis Academy Mayfield has the opportunity to build on the specialist status of Woolston School Language College with the appointment of Bernadette Hanly to one of three Deputy Principal posts, as it combines Languages with Business and Enterprise under its new specialism of Global Communication.

Bernadette Hanly, currently acting Head at Woolston School Language College, sees the global connections Oasis brings as a real learning opportunity for students,

“The opportunity to be involved in the formation of a new school is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a very exciting prospect. The new Academy will provide enhanced opportunities for language learning and internationalism and the facilities that will be available in the future for the students and local community can only be of benefit to the area.”

Oasis Community Learning is also delighted to have appointed Louise West (currently Assistant Head at Thomas Knyvett College in Middlesex) and Jane Hibbs (currently assistant Head at Monks Park School, Bristol) to Deputy Principal. All three new roles begin when the Academy opens in September 2008.

The Principal for Oasis Academy Mayfield has already been confirmed as Mrs Ruth Johnson (currently Head Teacher at Cantell School).

Mrs Johnson said:

“I am extremely pleased with the three strong Deputy Principal appointments we have made for Oasis Academy Mayfield.  All three colleagues bring a wealth of expertise and experience which can only benefit the students in this time of transition and change and will support the ongoing raising of standards.”

Councillor Peter Baillie, Cabinet member for Children’s Services and Learning at Southampton City Council, said:

“That Oasis is drawing some of the senior management team from the existing schools makes perfect sense. Bernadette, Louise and Jane have demonstrated their quality through their current roles and are all well respected by colleagues and parents. Each of their unique contributions as part of the leadership of Oasis Academy Mayfield will mean continuity for both staff and students as they make this exciting step forward.”
